I haven’t updated this site recently so I thought I’d come say hi (“hi!”) and give you an update on what I’ve been doing.
I guess the most exciting news is the arrival of two new family members. I’m too old for babies so they have to be of the furry kind.
First up, we have Piccolo – a Ragdoll kitten who came to us as a girl and then decided he was actually a boy. Yes, he’s been so much help with my writing, warming up my keyboard for me. Isn’t he kind?! He is my daughter Maddy’s kitten. I have to say I’ve never been a cat lover but I actually kind of like this one – he has the funniest personality and is pretty affectionate.
The next new arrival is Finn. He is a red tricolor Australian Shepherd. We already have Freya who is a red merle Aussie Shepherd and she is the sweetest, smartest dog I’ve ever met. We absolutely adore her and we are now sold on Aussie Shepherds – the perfect breed. So we got her a mate and he is the cutest little chubby thing – so fat he waddles. (My kindred spirit). I call him Fatty Finn. How sweet is that face? Unfortunately he thinks Piccolo is another puppy and leaps on him, pulling his tail and generally making Piccolo’s previously charmed life a little more difficult!
Hmm… what else? Dark Matter is coming along slowly. Slowly but surely. When I wrote Starcrossed: Perigee I somehow managed to discipline myself into writing at least 4000 words a day – or else! I don’t seem to be able to get into that kind of routine but comments like this…
… and this…
certainly spur me on. Aren’t they lovely? I want to thank everyone who’s taken the time to ask about the book and encourage me to pull my finger out on the second one. You are AWESOME, I love you guys and it gives me the nudge I need to get a wriggle on. I wish I was one of these authors who can just churn out books, but I agonize over everything – every word, every issue, every character. And I procrastinate while agonizing. I do want it finished though – I want to read it myself!
Talking of the writing process, I recently gave my Perigee manuscript to a lovely American friend who is now living in Australia. I’ve gotten some criticism about some of the things I’ve written being ‘un-American’. Seeing as it’s set in the USA (wasn’t planning to in the beginning) I needed to fix that as it was jolting readers out of the story. So Tina spent AGES going over it for me, then spent another few hours going through it with me, and we’ve hopefully fixed all the parts which were bugging people. Who’d have thought that after a lifetime of watching American movies and tv shows I wouldn’t realise how many things we still say differently. One thing I noticed is that in Australia we have heaps of colloquial sayings that Americans just don’t even have a term for. How do you possibly have conversations without a way of saying things like ‘I was spewin’!’ (I was extremely angry – just doesn’t sound as colourful!)
So Starcrossed: Perigee is now updated. If you bought it via Amazon you can go to your settings and click on your purchases, find it in the list and there should be an ‘update button’. I’m not sure how the other online stores update. As for a paperback copy – I haven’t updated that but I will when Dark Matter is about to come out. I am thinking of offering Starcrossed: Perigee for free again simply because there are so many pirated copies out there (of the old version with the annoying un-Americanisms) that I’d rather the newer version was ‘out there’ anyway.
I’d better get back to work. This darned book isn’t writing itself! Thank you, patient readers for sticking with me 🙂
